A resources on SCORM that may be of interest: ADL. SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model, and is "a collection of specifications adapted from multiple sources to provide a comprehensive suite of e-learning capabilities that enable accessibility and reuse of Web-based learning content." WHEW!...that's a mouthful! Basically it allows materials to be used across multiple platforms...
Currently one of the BIG drawbacks of e-learning is the diversity of products that do not work together. For example, if I design resources on WebCT, they are usable on WebCT...if I want to use them on TLM or Blackboard...I'm out of luck...I have to redo my work. Think of it in terms of transferability of documents designed in WordPerfect or Microsoft Word...these documents can be converted...(not perfectly, but still functionally). SCORM (and other standards) will allow for greater interoperability between various platforms - a significant benefit to the future of online learning.
I'm sure all of you received Lucille's email about the PBS Live Satellite Event on October 18: "Surviving and Thriving in Your First Online Course" (1:30 - 3:00 - Black Lecture Theater - no registration necessary...just show up)...should be a good starting point for "onliners" at RRC...for more info go to: PBS
