When we started planning our online course in the Hospitality Department, we realized that we needed to get students to think about their perceptions of online learning. Online learning is a very new experience to most students, and our goal in raising student's awareness was to lead them to planning for overcoming weaknesses. To do this, we created an online self-test.

Online Self Assessment

This self-assessment does not allow for tracking of student results...we were more concerned about getting students to evaluate their own perceptions...we briefly explored using Hot Potatoes for this self-evaluation, but decided against it...it didn't allow for comments back to students at the end of the test, based on accrued results.

Hot Potatoes is free (with restrictions) software that creates simple interactive testing/exercises. When a student finishes a test or quiz, the results can be emailed to the instructor...in the future, it might be valuable to compile student comments/views of online learning before they begin a course...post-course evaluations could be done as well to see how views change...

Great Site: Elearning Research Center. This site includes a good overview of elearning and many links to resources/organizations...
